어린이 권장도서 100권. 이것만은 읽어야…

한국학생들이 수학은 잘하지만 Reading 과 Writing은 상대적으로 어려워 한다고 한다. 그 이유는 무엇일까? 이유는 단 한가지이다. 어려서 부터 책을 많이 읽지 않았기 때문이다. 다시말하면, 아이들이 어려서 부터 책읽는 습관과 이해력 형성이 현지의 본토박이 미국어린이들보다 떨어지기 때문이다. 그 이유는 부모님들 특히 이민 1세 부모님들이 자녀들에게 영어책을 읽어주기에는 언어가 유창하지 않은 부모님들이 많고, 읽어준다고 해도 아이들이 질문을 했을때 자신있게 설명해줄수 있는 부모님들이 많지 않기 때문이다.

책을 많이 읽어야 한다는 것은 누구나 다 알고 있는 사실이다.  어떤 책이 아이들 교육에 유익하고 상상력을 풍부하게 하는지 알고 그러한 책부터 차근차근 읽을수 있는 기회를 제공해 주고, 부모님이 영어능력이나 시간적 여유가 없어서 바른 독서지도를 해 줄수없다면 주변의 도움을 받아서 어릴때 부터 독서습관을 길러준다면, 한국계 학생들이 수학에 비해 영어를 못한다는 말은 더이상 성립하지 않을것이며, 아마도 영어뿐만아니라 수학도 잘하는 똑똑한 학생이 한국학생들이라는 말이 머지않아 생겨날 것이라고 믿는다.

아래는 어린아이들에게 유익한 권장도서 100권에 대한 목록이다. 집안에 몇권을 가지고 있는지 찾아보고, 아니면 도서관에서 또는 서점에 들러 아이와 함께 아이들이 좋아하는 것부터 차근차근 읽을수 있는 기회를 갖게 해준다면 좋을것이다.
